"In 1997, having spent the previous four decades in Los Angeles, Márton Szipál, photographer, returned to Budapest. The period dating from his return has been an outstandingly important and successful one for Márton Szipál, or as he was known in Hollywood, Martin S. Martin. His photographs have been featured in several Hungarian exhibitions, and on these occasions we could get acquainted with his exceptional personality, which is that of a photographer whose stories are virtually inseparable from his pictures. Indeed, anecdotes and rumors about world-famous stars always find an eager audience. Few have recognized, however, that Márton Szipál - Marci - also gives us an account of his method in his lighthearted and funny reminiscences, for it is precisely the intense relationship he sought to develop with his models that constitutes the powerful expressiveness of his photographs. Admittedly, we may all find ourselves fascinated by the Marci's charming personality, which is not unlike that of a Hollywood star.
Nevertheless, despite the fact that Márton Szipál makes several appearances in exhibitions, as yet no professionally conceived, comprehensive exposition of his life work has been attempted. The present volume is intended to be just such an exposition.
The importance of this volume lies in the fact that the 150 photographs it comprises do indeed amount to a comprehensive representation of the art of Márton Szipál. It reaches as far back in Szipál's career as his earliest Hungarian works. The book traces his period in America, featuring his photographs which by now have become iconic: portraits of film stars (Margaux Hemingway, Olivia Hussey, Priscilla Presley), artists (Henry Miller) and, of course, the fashion photographs. The texts in the volume assess his work in a professional manner, present the course of his career, his lifestyle, and the context in which the pictures were taken. For photography is by no means a timeless medium. Photographs preserve with incredible precision the moment of exposition, the vogues, the sentiments and the ideas of the age in which they were taken. Thus, anyone who opens this substantial book will gain insight into six decades of a lifetime.
