Walks
Along the Great Boulevard
Photographs by Kapolka Gábor - Csordás Lajos
Is there a route in Pest more characteristic than the Great Boulevard? Is there a
tram in Pest more characteristic than the No. 6? This volume guides you along the
most prominent tramline of Budapest, from Moszkva Square to Móricz Zsigmond
Circus, along the Great Boulevard, built at the end of the 19th century, exploring its
environs. Revealed here are its Parisian-like beauties, the intention being to present
with affection and amazement the significant features, atmosphere and residents
of this metropolitan boulevard beyond the unfortunate dilapidation of its buildings.
Inside This Book:
Baroque, Eclectic, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Bauhaus
and Socialist Realism mix at the 'large bend' of Margit
Boulevard. At the corner of Horvát Street is the 1887
Sicher House. The Casino was here from 1911, the
Magyar Világ café from 1937. Then there are the double
turreted upper middle class flats built in 1913-14 for
the Ercs sugar factory, next door is the Trust Pension
Fund's 1936-37 Bauhaus residential block with its frosted
glass balconies at 29 and Mrs Lipót Herzog's 1935
modernist corner building at 38/b.
